The story of the R6 Distillery begins with one Rob Rubens becoming disillusioned after nearly a decade of working in corporate America. After taking a tour of the Old New Orleans Rum Distillery he was captivated by the idea of starting a small and family-owned distillery and bringing quality spirits to Los Angeles. At the suggestion of the companys chairman, an avid ornithologist, in 1912 Gilbeys began selling whiskey named after the European robin redbreast.The latest release in the Redbreast line, Lustau Edition continues to pay homage to the legacy of Gilbey and its Irish origins while highlighting the brands ties to Spains legendary sherry producer, Bodegas Lustau in Jerez. Though prior editions of Redbreast have also been aged in former sherry casks, this blend was crafted with the goal of putting flavors imparted from Oloroso sherry at the forefront of the palate. The Master Blender at Midleton Distillery (where Redbreast is distilled), Billy Leighton, stated "Its putting the spotlight on the Lustau, but its putting the floodlight on the sherry business in general.
